Q. What is PFLAG?
A. PFLAG stands for Parents Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays. We are a national non-profit organization dedicated to support, education and advocacy for the GLBT (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgendered) community and their families and friends.
Q. What does PFLAG do?
A. PFLAG holds confidential, non-judgmental support meetings for GLBT people and their families, friends, and allies to discuss their feelings and concerns. We educate people on the myths and facts surrounding sexual orientation, homosexuality, gender identity, and related issues. We advocate for equality by working to change discriminatory laws, policies, and attitudes.
Q. Who are the members of PFLAG?
A. We have a diverse membership that includes people from all walks of life. Sexual orientation and gender identity issues transcend the boundaries of race, religion, culture, age and economical background. Some of our members are LGBT people, some of our members have family or friends who are LGBT, and some are allies of the LGBT community who want to help in some way. We welcome anyone who shares our common goals of support, education and advocacy for the LGBT community.
Q. When and where are your meetings?
A. The OKC/EDMOND chapter of PFLAG meets on the first Tuesday of the month in Edmond and the first Wednesday of the month in OKC. You do not have to be a member to come to our meetings, but we encourage membership for those who support and share our goals.
Q. If you meet at a church does that mean you are a religious organization?
A. No, PFLAG is not a religious organization. We do sometimes discuss religious biases towards homosexuality and how that may affect us in our own faiths if that is of issue. However, we are not affiliated with any specific religion nor do we endorse a specific religion. Your personal spiritual choices in no way preclude you from becoming a member.
Q. How do I join PFLAG or get more information about the organization?
A. Feel free to come to any of our meetings for more information. If you would like more information before the next meeting, or if you are seeking support, feel free to contact us by phone at (405) 525-3800 or email us at pflagokc@yahoo.com Q. How much does it cost to join?
A. Currently the annual membership fee is $35.00, and $15.00 for students. We also welcome donations in the amount of your choice, but it is not required for membership. All donations are tax-deductible.
